I never really liked Princess Diana's wedding dress. I am not a fashionista and was not one even during that day many years ago when we watched in awe as the lovely young woman got married to the most eligible bachelor in England. It was a fairytale wedding and we swooned, totally in awe of everything - of the teenaged commoner plucked from obscurity to become the wife of the future king, of the massive cathedral where the wedding rites were held, of the pomp and circumstance that marked the occasion.
And then there was the dress...
It was supposed to have been made with 10,000 sequins (mother-of-pearl) and pearls and had a 20-plus long train. Unfortunately, even with all that luxurious addition, the dress remained gawdy, drowning the then-princess-to-be in its voluminous fabric. True enough, all you could see were Princess Di's arms and head from the neck up. Her wonderful figure was nowhere to be seen.
Years later, I read that the dress was made big so when Diana entered the cathedral, she would be seen. Really? She's the bride to the Prince of England. Why wouldn't anyone look at her... on her wedding day? And she was lovely to behold, too.
And yet, even with the awkwardness of the dress (which reminded me of an oversized nightgown), Diana was the consummate blushing bride, with her shy smile and that famous chin held low, eyes up. She was stunning. The dress tried to drown her. Maybe it was a warning of her life as a royal, who knows? Thank goodness she later developed a fashion sense that made her one of the best dressed in the world.
